MAP OF SZEGED
INVITATION
Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of the Alzheimer's Disease Section of the Hungarian Society of Neurologists and Psychiatrists, I have the pleasure of cordially inviting you to attend the Fourth Hungarian Conference on Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders.
The Conference will be hosted by Albert Szent-Györgyi Medical University in Szeged. The city of Szeged, often called the "city of sunshine", is situated on the southern edge of the Great Hungarian Plain.
This Conference is designed to serve as a forum for the exchange of scientific information, results, thoughts and future plans concerning different aspects of this terrible disease, where the diagnosis is far more advanced than our understanding of the etiology and the possible therapy. Particular attention will therefore be paid to issues relating to the factors which may cause the disease and to the therapeutic possibilities.
The plenary lectures by invited speakers, the round-table sessions organized by experts in the field, the different symposia and the poster presentations will offer great opportunities for lively discussions. In order to celebrate the Decade of the Brain and the Day of Hungarian Science, it is the intention of the organizers to bring together all Hungarians working on Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders.
We invite and welcome the participation of experts from all countries to facilitate the exchange of views and scientific information. We are confident that, with the participation of leading international scientists, our 4th Hungarian Alzheimer’s disease meeting will prove a success and scientifically rewarding.
We look forward to welcoming you to Szeged in October, 1998.

ABOUT SZEGED
Szeged's name first appeared as Cigeddin in
a document dating from 1183. The area, however, was already inhabited by
the Illyrians from the 8th to the 7th centuries B.C. They were followed
by Celts, Huns and Avars. In the very earliest years of Hungary, Szeged
was an important shipping center, particularly for salt. But there were
hard times, too. The Mongols swept through the town in the 13th century,
and the Turks plundered Szeged in 1543, then staying on for almost 150
years.
Between the 13th and 19th centuries, Szeged
had a fortress built by King Béla IV, which provided the inhabitants
with defence for centuries.
Few traces of the old times have remained.
The concentric boulevards and
gridwork of central streets are too efficient
to be very ancient. Everything can be explained by the city's situation
on the River Tisza, near the lowest-lying point in all Hungary.
In the spring of 1879, Szeged took the full
brunt of the angry, swollen river. It was almost completely swept away.
After the deluge, the city center was raised to a safer level, embankments
were built and boulevards and squares were laid out for Hungary's first
planned city, funded with generous help from many countries in Europe,
which came to the aid of Szeged.
Today, the riverfront, once so menacing, is
Szeged's most relaxed feature, with tree-shaded promenades, excursion boats,
and floating swimming pools.
Szeged's most monumental landmark, the Votive
Church, is a neo-Romanesque marvel of the 20th century, with enough pinnacles
and arches for a dozen ordinary churches. The great facade of the Cathedral,
with mosaics of the apostles flanking a tall marble statue of the Virgin
Mary, provides the backdrop for the Szeged Summer Open-air Festival of
opera, musicals and ballet.
The square in front of the Cathedral, which
holds over 4000 seats during the one month of the festival, is surrounded
by University departments including chemistry, microbiology, physics, hygiene,
epidemiology and biochemistry. The Pontifical Aula and Theological College
are also sited here.
The city center (Széchenyi tér)
is a city park rather than a conventional main square, with old trees,
lawns, flower-gardens, fountains, monuments and benches. The most prominent
building here, the City Hall, was rebuilt in Eclectic Baroque style after
the great flood.
Szeged's Moorish Art Nouveau glory is the
''new'' synagogue, with every style from the Byzantine to the Baroque represented
in its turrets and fretwork. The cupola symbolizes the world with its gradually
darkening cobalt-blue glass strewn with stars.
The synagogue, as an astonishing mixture of
devoutness and opulence, is surrounded by a garden created by its former
chief rabbi, who was also a botanist.
Today, Szeged has a population of 186,000.
It is at once a cosmopolitan University town with approximately 50,000
students in its two Universities, five Colleges, many high schools, secondary
vocational schools and primary schools, and the provincial capital of the
Hungarian Great Plain.
When Hungarians think of Szeged, three products
usually spring to mind: the tasty Szeged salami, the highly seasoned Szeged
fishermen's soup and the brightly decorated slippers manufactured locally.
As a University town, the atmosphere is uncommonly cheerful and youthful.
At the confluence of two cultures, of eastern
and western Europe, Szeged is permeated by what residents call a Mediterranean
attitude.
