More than 700 German medical students have studied basic medical sciences in their mother language at the University of Szeged in ten years time. The fact that 80-90% of these students continue their studies at German universities shows that the training is recognized in Germany as well.
In 1999 the University of Szeged was the first of the countryside universities introducing German language medical training. Since then more than 700 German medical students started their studies in Szeged, passing their exams with success. After the first two years about 80-90% of students are accepted at German universities thanks to the strong theoretical basis acquired in Szeged. However, some of the students stay in Szeged after the basic modules as they have the opportunity to go on with their studies in English or Hungarian Language Medical Training. Furthermore, there are discussions in process with various German institutions about the possibility of joint programmes in which students could start their studies in Szeged and after completion of two years they continue studies in Germany according to the programme of the Faculty, with the coordination of the University. "The number of first year medical students admitted is very low in Germany so German Language Medical Training in Szeged is a great opportunity for German students interested in medical sciences. We believe that a large number of foreign students are arriving to the University of Szeged in the future as they represent foreign cultures in the everyday life of the university and also provide notable income" - says Professor György Benedek, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. Besides twenty years of English Language Medical Training and ten years of German Laguage Medical Training, pharmacist and dental students also have the opportunity to participate in English Language Programmes. At the foreign language lectures of the three faculties 60 nationalities participate with almost 1000 students.
