According to the Shanghai list, the University of Szeged is one of the best universities in Central Europe.
It has been the starting point of knowledge and erudition for several generations – a famous intellectual workshop where up-to-date knowledge is guaranteed by outstanding teachers and researchers who strive to establish not only a school but also a lively community. With its 12 faculties, the university is a modern integrated higher education institution that has its strengths in its versatility. From undergraduate to PhD courses and post-secondary vocational education, the University of Szeged offers courses on all levels of tertiary education and relies on its traditions and the opportunities of the three-tier education system. In its more than 200 undergraduate (BA and BSc) courses almost every area of science is represented, from political and law sciences to musical arts. Sound knowledge, which allows the students of our university to be regularly successful participants of domestic and international competitions, is the result of teaching based on the joint thinking of various disciplines. Experts excelling at their chosen field of science also contribute to the fame and respect of their ‘alma mater' i.e. the University of Szeged. The specialization possibilities enable the graduates of our university to be successful by being useful members of both society and sciences either after obtaining a BA or BSc degree or on enrolling on a Master and later a PhD course. In the spirit of lifelong learning, the University of Szeged offers its students training courses and programmes that effectively help to broaden their already acquired knowledge. Research carried out among graduates has shown that for the students of our university, good quality education does not only consist of mastering factual knowledge. Practice-oriented training courses preparing for teamwork, sharing modern technological knowledge and learning special skills are just as critical as a good command of foreign languages. Besides awarding graduates a valuable and recognized diploma, the University of Szeged tries to do everything it can to help them succeed in life. The aim of the training courses – job fairs, teaching job hunting techniques, courses promoting equal possibilities or integrating into a workplace – organized for students is to better capitalize on the knowledge, acquired throughout the university years, in career building. Thanks to the efficiency of courses, about 90 per cent of the graduates from the University of Szeged find employment, most of them within three months after graduation. Based on the domestic and international renown of the university, a diploma obtained in Szeged helps its holder as an excellent letter of recommendation to succeed in life. The unique infrastructural development contributed towards the success of teaching at the University of Szeged. As a result of this development, a university campus, the Attila József Study and Information Centre (TIK), receiving 5,000 visitors daily, was completed in 2004. The building houses the University Library with some 2 million titles, a Conference Centre, lecture halls and student services – it is a meeting point for university students and professors where learning is supported by high tech. With its rooms used for social life and learning/teaching and its events, TIK (rated by OPEC as one of the world’s most important educational investments in 2005) has become a centre of scientific and cultural life of both the university and the town of Szeged. In fact, the Attila József Study and Information Centre is an impressive place where the University of Szeged may deliver its regional mission to support, in addition to education, scientific and artistic life. Maybe the most outstanding university investment of recent years is the spectacular reconstruction of the building of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration and the extension to the I. Biology Block of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Information Technology. As a result of the construction work finished in the summer of 2007, the new facility provides the most advanced and complex conditions for teaching and applied research.
